En allant d’un lieu d’échange de travail à un autre dans le sud de la France, nous avons profité d’une journée de tourisme dans la ville de Puy-en-Velay.
Selon About-France.com, c’est au Puy en Velay que beaucoup des premiers pèlerins se sont rassemblés pour le départ du difficile voyage vers le sanctuaire de Saint-Jacques-de-Compostelle, la grande destination de pèlerinage médiéval en Espagne. Les premiers pèlerinages partent du Puy à la fin du Xe siècle, et au Moyen Âge, la ville devient un centre religieux majeur, le grand point de départ de l’un des grands itinéraires de pèlerinage de Compostelle, la Via Podiensis.
Alors que l’idée du trekking à Santiago s’est évanouie pendant des siècles après le Moyen Âge, devenant une tâche à entreprendre uniquement par les très dévoués ou (fous) hardis, elle est maintenant bien revenue à la mode. Aujourd’hui, Le Puy a retrouvé sa place importante de point de départ du plus grand itinéraire de pèlerinage européen, un chemin de randonnée de plus de 1000 km parcouru chaque année, en tout ou en partie, par plusieurs milliers de pèlerins ou de randonneurs.

The only way to reach the 10th century chapel of Saint Michel de l’Aiguilhe is up 268 steps. Closed on Sundays. Guess we’ll check out this view another time as well!
